New Moon in Cancer (July 2023)

We talk a lot about the cycles of the seasons here, but seasonal alignment is not the only natural rhythm we observe. The moon and her ever changing faces is another powerful symbol to be mindful of. So, we’d like to take a moment to discuss this upcoming new moon, the phase that it signals, as well as why and how we honor it.

New Moon in Cancer

The new moon on July 17th, 2023 falls in the nurturing and intuitive zodiac sign of Cancer. Cancer, a water sign ruled by the Moon, is associated with emotions, family, and home. This new moon invites us to delve into our emotions and explore the depths of our inner world. It prompts us to connect with the concept of home, not only as a physical shelter but also as a place of emotional solace and security.

This new moon may encourage introspection and self-reflection. The introspective nature of Cancer combined with the energy of a new moon offers an opportunity to set intentions that align with our emotional needs and personal growth. This is a potent time to evaluate our emotional well-being and let go of any past baggage or negative emotions that may hinder our progress. The nurturing energy of Cancer will support us in creating a solid foundation for our dreams and goals.

Moon/Sun Opposite Pluto Retrograde in Capricorn

Despite the fact that we have a new moon in cancer every year around the same time, no two new moons are the same. This year it’s a little extra spicy due to its opposition to Pluto, which is retrograde in Capricorn. Because new moons happen when the sun and moon align at the same point that means the sun is sitting in that same opposition to Pluto. You don’t have to know what that means, I’ll give you a synopsis.

Pluto, the planet of rebirth and intense transformation is retrograde in the grounded sign of Capricorn. The influence of Capricorn, known for its practicality and ambition, introduces a powerful dynamic, urging us to face our fears and dismantle the structures that no longer serve our highest good. This transit is signaling a time to reflect on, make changes to or completely destroy the things in our life that keep us from our greatest goals and ambitions. This cycle could be propelling us out of procrastination, or compelling us to finally make concrete plans towards our desires. We may find ourselves questioning societal expectations, traditional career paths, and the hierarchies that have shaped our sense of worth and success. Pluto is associated with the unconscious so it provides an excellent time to dig into our shadow and uncover limiting beliefs.

Combined with the new moon in Cancer we have a unique opportunity to examine where that overlaps with our sense of home and security and to set intentions towards the changes we intend to make in these areas. This opposition between the Moon and Pluto invites us to embrace vulnerability and face our fears in order to emerge stronger and more resilient on the other side.

Setting Intentions with The New Moon

Setting intentions under a new moon helps us clarify our goals and desires, allowing us to gain focus and direction in our lives. The new moon acts as a catalyst, providing a fertile ground for our intentions to grow and manifest. As the old lunar cycle comes to an end and a new one begins, the empty sky acts as a clean slate, ripe with possibilities. By consciously setting intentions under a new moon, we align our desires with the universe's energy… and if theres one thing we’re passionate about it’s aligning with the natural rhythms around us.

How To Set Your Intentions

“You, a child of the earth basking under the new moon nights sky. “

There are countless ways to do this, and as we continue to make new moon posts every month ( which is one of our intentions) we will discuss a variety of methods. Today we will just keep it simple… with journaling and conscious observation. So, on Monday night we recommend going outside, putting your bare feet on the ground and tilting your face up to the sky. Simply stand there for a few minutes and become aware of, and perhaps even visualize, the sky-to-ground connection. You, a child of the earth basking under the new moon nights sky. Be aware of the interconnectedness of yourself with the rest of the cosmos.

To take it a step further, spend some time journaling around the topics of comfort, safety, ambition, and your goals. Look for some underlying limited beliefs around these topics and ACTUALLY WRITE DOWN YOUR GOALS. The act of writing is quite LITERALLY (pun intended) the act of putting a thought into physical reality.

But wait… Theres More

Despite what LOA enthusiasts may tell you, simply thinking about the thing you want isn’t enough. Over the next two weeks take at least one inspired action toward your goal. As the moon enters its waxing phase and moves towards the first quarter moon, growing in her power, you too would be wise to increase the energy you have put towards your new moon intentions.

Welcome Selenophile!

We here at Gaian Rhythm intend to continue this moon series and we invite you to follow along. A “Selenophile” is a person who loves the moon, and we think if you begin to work with her and disciver her magic you’ll become one too!
